On Teaching

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  ― Nelson Mandela

As a teacher, I view the classroom as an incubator for knowledge and personal growth. Thus, the goal of my teaching is to:
  1. spark students’ "sociological imagination" and their overall intellectual curiosity
  2. help them understand key concepts and theories
  3. equip them with skills necessary to be critical research consumers and knowledge producers
  4. broaden and diversify their worldviews
Aside from teaching students the basics, I am also a strong believer in learning by doing. Being able to apply course concepts can be a helpful, transformative, and memorable learning experience for students. Thus, I value active learning in the classroom and the integration of service learning/community engagement (when appropriate). I push my students to draw connections with what they learn in class and the real world.  By the end of a course, I measure success not only by students’ substantive knowledge, but also their ability to think critically, communicate their ideas effectively, and apply what they learned to the world around them.
